AB-731 AI Transformation Leader: What the Exam Covers and Who Should Take It

• Nathaniel Miller

If leadership is being asked to roll out Microsoft 365 Copilot and nobody can say when Copilot Studio fits and when Foundry fits, start with AB-731. Microsoft’s AI Transformation Leader exam checks whether a business leader can spot a real generative AI use case, pick the Microsoft tool that matches it, and plan adoption. You are not expected to write code.

Microsoft updated the skills measured on July 22, 2026. The exam runs 45 minutes, it is beginner level, and a score of 700 or higher passes. Confirm the live study guide on Microsoft Learn before you schedule. For where Azure and AI credentials sit next to security and infrastructure tracks, see our IT certification roadmap for 2026.

AB-731 AI Transformation Leader: a beginner Microsoft exam for business leaders, no coding required

AB-731 tests judgment about Microsoft AI tools, not the ability to build a model.

What Is the AB-731 Certification?

Exam AB-731: Microsoft Certified: AI Transformation Leader is a beginner Microsoft certification for people who guide AI adoption inside a company. The official audience is business decision-makers who use Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft Foundry to find opportunities, choose tools, and plan rollout.

It is not an administrator exam and it is not a developer exam. Microsoft says candidates should already have led adoption or change management, and they should be familiar with Microsoft 365 services, Microsoft Foundry, and general AI capabilities. There is no coding requirement and no formal project-hour prerequisite on the certification page.

That makes AB-731 closer to a leadership fundamentals exam than to AZ-104. The questions are about fit: which Copilot experience matches this process, when grounding matters, and how you govern the rollout.

Register with a personal Microsoft account if you can. Microsoft warns that exam records tied to a work or school account can be lost if you leave that organization.

If you fail, you can retake the exam 24 hours after the first attempt. Later retakes follow Microsoft’s standard retake policy, and each attempt is a new fee.

Who Should Take AB-731?

  • Directors, VPs, and function leaders in operations, finance, HR, sales, or marketing who have to approve Copilot licenses and say no to bad use cases
  • IT and transformation managers who own the adoption plan, the champion network, and the governance conversation with security
  • Microsoft partner sellers and customer leads who need credible language for Copilot, Copilot Studio, and Foundry without pretending to be engineers
  • Technical staff who advise leaders and keep getting pulled into “which Copilot do we buy?” meetings

Skip AB-731 if the job is to build or administer the AI stack. People who will configure Azure AI services day to day should look at AI-900 first, then a role-based Azure exam. People who still need shared cloud vocabulary before any of this should start with AZ-900.

What AB-731 Covers

AB-731 exam domains as of July 2026: generative AI business value 35 to 40 percent, Microsoft AI apps 35 to 40 percent, adoption strategy 20 to 25 percent

Microsoft assesses three skill areas. Weights below are from the study guide dated July 22, 2026. Use that guide as the source of truth if Microsoft revises it.

Domain Weight What it is really asking
Identify the business value of generative AI solutions 35 to 40% Generative AI versus other AI, pretrained versus fine-tuned models, token cost and ROI, fabrications, bias, prompt engineering, grounding, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG)
Identify benefits, capabilities, and opportunities for Microsoft’s AI apps and services 35 to 40% Which Copilot experience fits a process, Copilot Studio, Microsoft Graph, Researcher and Analyst, when to build, buy, or extend, and where Foundry Tools, Azure AI Search, and Microsoft Foundry fit
Identify an implementation and adoption strategy 20 to 25% Responsible AI, an AI council, champions, license types, and the data, security, privacy, and cost effects of a rollout

The first domain is where non-technical candidates either pass or stall. You need to explain why a grounded answer is safer than an ungrounded one, and why token cost changes the business case. You do not need to train a model.

The second domain is a product map. Microsoft wants you to match a process to a specific experience: Copilot Chat, Copilot inside a Microsoft 365 app, Copilot Studio, Researcher or Analyst, or a Foundry service. “We should use AI” is not an answer the exam will reward.

The third domain is the operating model. Expect responsible AI principles (fairness, reliability and safety, privacy and security, inclusiveness, transparency, and accountability), plus practical adoption pieces: a council, champions, and the difference between pay-as-you-go, monthly, and licenses included with a Microsoft 365 subscription.

AB-731 vs AI-900: Which Should You Take?

AB-731 versus AI-900: AI Transformation Leader for business adoption, AI-900 for Azure AI fundamentals

These two exams get bundled in the same conversation because both say “AI” and both are beginner level. They test different jobs.

AB-731 AI-900
Credential AI Transformation Leader Azure AI Fundamentals
Question behind it Which Microsoft AI tool should we adopt, and how do we roll it out? What are Azure’s AI services, and what do the core terms mean?
Center of gravity Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Studio, Foundry Azure AI concepts and services
Coding Not required Not required
Best for Leaders and adoption owners Anyone who needs Azure AI literacy before a technical path

Practical rule: if the next meeting is a Copilot license and governance decision, take AB-731. If the next meeting is “what can Azure AI actually do?”, take AI-900. A lot of IT managers need both, in that order only if the business case is already on the table. Otherwise AI-900 first keeps the later AB-731 conversations honest.

AZ-900 still sits underneath either exam when the room does not share cloud vocabulary. Our AZ-900 cost and fit guide covers that step, and the Azure certification path shows what comes after fundamentals.

How to Prepare for AB-731

  1. Read the July 22, 2026 skills outline on Microsoft Learn and mark every product name you cannot define in one sentence.
  2. Build a one-page product map before you memorize principles. Copilot Chat, in-app Copilot, Copilot Studio, Researcher, Analyst, Microsoft Graph, Foundry Tools, Azure AI Search, Microsoft Foundry. Know the job of each.
  3. Practice scenario choice, not trivia. Given a process, a data-quality problem, and a budget, which option fits, and what governance has to exist first?
  4. Use Microsoft’s practice assessment and exam sandbox so the 45-minute clock and the item types are not a surprise.
  5. Take a structured course if the product map is still fuzzy. StormWind’s AB-731 course walks through business value, grounding and RAG, Copilot and Foundry scenarios, and responsible AI together, which is how the exam is written.

Do not study from exam dumps. Those queries show up in search, and they are a fast way to learn outdated or wrong answers on an outline Microsoft just updated.

How StormWind Studios Approaches AB-731 Prep

StormWind’s AB-731: AI Transformation Leader course is built for the certification exam, not for a generic “AI strategy” seminar. Learners work through how organizations judge, implement, and scale generative AI on Microsoft technology.

The course lines up with the three domains:

  • Business value of generative AI, including prompt engineering, grounding with retrieval-augmented generation, and how data quality changes the outcome
  • Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Studio, Azure AI services, and Microsoft Foundry, matched to business scenarios
  • Responsible AI principles and governance so a rollout has an owner, a control, and a cost model

Live instruction matters on this exam because the hard part is the tradeoff, not the definition. A leader can ask what a fabrication does to a customer-facing process in the same session an IT owner asks which Copilot license type they are actually buying. That is the conversation AB-731 is testing.

After AB-731, technical staff who need Azure AI vocabulary continue with AI-900. Teams that still lack cloud basics go back to AZ-900 before they assign role-based Azure work.

Next Steps

Decide who in the room is choosing tools and who is building them. AB-731 is for the first group. Download the current skills outline, confirm the Pearson VUE price for your country, and book only after the product map is solid.
